About the Ford Escape
The Escape is Ford's compact crossover, sold in the US since 2001 and for many years the company's second-best-selling vehicle after the F-150. It has gone from a boxy, truck-styled SUV to a car-like crossover built on the same platform as the Focus and later the Bronco Sport. Tire buyers land here because the sizes changed sharply between generations, from a tall 235/70R16 to a low 225/55R19.

First and second generation
Upright, boxy bodywork with a flat hood, square wheel arches and a tailgate with separate opening glass. A hybrid version arrived for 2005, the first hybrid SUV sold anywhere. Standard tires across the run were 235/70R16, a tall fitment with a lot of sidewall.

Unveiled at the 2012 Detroit show, this is the Kuga-based Escape, completely different in shape: rounded nose, sloping roof, deep side glass and EcoBoost turbo engines instead of the old V-6. S and SE trims run 17-inch wheels with 225/60R17 tires, with 18- and 19-inch options above.

Fourth generation

What the press said
The first Escape was praised for driving like a car rather than a truck and criticized for interior quality and fuel economy. The 2013 model drew good reviews for handling and the EcoBoost engines, with criticism for the MyFord Touch infotainment system and, later, for a series of recalls. The 2020 car was received as a competent but not class-leading crossover: reviewers liked the hybrid powertrains and the ride, and complained about hard interior plastics for the price and about styling that drew mixed reactions. Fuel economy from the hybrid versions has been the strongest point in recent reviews.

US sales peaked at 308,296 in 2017 and have settled around 140,000 a year as the Bronco Sport and Maverick took part of the Escape's audience.
Was it a success?
The Escape was one of the most successful crossovers ever sold in America, though its volume has halved since 2017 partly because Ford now sells three vehicles on the same platform. Resale is average, weaker on 1.5-liter three-cylinder models and better on hybrids. Reliability is the model's weak point: the third-generation cars had multiple recalls including coolant intrusion on the 1.6-liter EcoBoost, and transmission complaints follow both the older six-speed and the current eight-speed automatics.
