About the Ford F-150

The F-150 is Ford's half-ton, full-size pickup and the best-selling vehicle in the United States by a wide margin. It is sold in three cab styles, three bed lengths and everything from a steel-wheeled work truck to a leather-lined Limited. Tire shoppers land here because wheel diameter swings from 17 to 22 inches depending on trim, so two F-150s of the same model year can need completely different tires.

Launched in 1975. Launched in 1975, the F-150 slotted in between the F-100 and the F-250 as a heavier half-ton, and its higher gross weight rating kept it clear of the tighter emissions and catalytic-converter rules that applied to lighter trucks.

The F-150 has been treated as the segment benchmark for most of its recent life, and the 2015 switch to an aluminum body plus the EcoBoost turbo V6 engines drew a lot of attention for pushing the class forward. Reviewers consistently praise the breadth of the lineup, the towing and payload numbers and the interior of the higher trims. The regular criticisms are a firm, sometimes bouncy ride from the leaf-sprung rear axle when the bed is empty, and cheap-feeling plastics in the mid-range work trims. The 2009 truck took Motor Trend's Truck of the Year award, and the hybrid and Lightning variants have generally been received as competent rather than class-changing.

Ford's full-size pickup comes very close to being all things to all people.

Was it a success?

Commercially this is as successful as a vehicle gets in the United States, and it has led the truck sales charts for well over four decades. Resale is strong, particularly on crew-cab 4x4s with the 5.0 V8 or the 3.5 EcoBoost. Reliability reputation is mixed rather than bad: the engines and axles hold up, but early 10-speed automatics, cam phasers on the 5.0 and turbo plumbing on early EcoBoost trucks generated plenty of warranty work. Parts and tire availability are about as good as it gets.

Tire options on the Ford F-150

Work trims run 17-inch wheels on 245/70R17 or 245/75R17, XLT and Lariat use 275/65R18, and the 20-inch fitment is 275/55R20 on 2015-2020 trucks and the taller 275/60R20 from 2021. Limited and Platinum trims wear 275/45R22, which is the single most expensive size on the truck and the one owners most often step back down from. Nothing on a standard F-150 is staggered and nothing comes with factory run-flats; OE fitments are usually highway all-seasons such as Hankook Dynapro or Goodyear Wrangler, with General Grabber all-terrains on Tremor and BFGoodrich on the Raptor. Raptors are the exception on sizing, running 315/70R17 or a 37x12.50R17 on the 37-inch package. If you tow near the truck's rating, stay with the OE load index or move to an LT tire in load range E rather than a passenger-rated upsize, and note that 18-inch winter tires are far easier to find than 22-inch ones.
