About the Ford Fusion

The Fusion was Ford's mid-size sedan from 2006 to 2020, sold with four-cylinder, EcoBoost, hybrid and plug-in hybrid drivetrains and, on some trims, all-wheel drive. Tire shoppers land here across two very different cars: the 2006-2012 Mazda6-derived original and the 2013-2020 redesign that looked like a scaled-down Aston Martin. Fitments run 16 to 19 inches, all in common sizes that are cheap to replace.

The first Fusion was welcomed as a competent, honest mid-size sedan and criticized for a cheap interior until the 2010 update fixed it; the 2010 car won North American Car of the Year. The 2013 redesign drew widespread praise for its styling and chassis, with reviewers calling it one of the better-handling front-drive sedans in the class, and criticism for a tight rear seat, a small trunk in hybrid form and EcoBoost fuel economy that fell short of the window sticker in real driving. The Fusion Sport with its twin-turbo V6 and all-wheel drive was received enthusiastically as an unexpected performance bargain. Toward the end reviewers noted that Ford had stopped developing the car, and that rivals had moved on.

The Fusion is good at many things but not great at any, and competitors are more focused and refined.

US sales peaked at 306,860 in 2014 and were still above 110,000 in the final full year, 2020; Ford ended the Fusion not for lack of demand but as part of its decision to stop selling sedans in North America.

Was it a success?

A commercial success that Ford discontinued anyway, which is the most interesting thing about it. Resale is modest, partly because of fleet volume and partly because the whole segment is out of fashion, so a late Titanium or Hybrid is genuinely cheap for the equipment. Reliability is average: the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter is simple and durable, the 1.5- and 2.0-liter EcoBoost engines have coolant intrusion and turbo complaints, and the hybrid's battery and brake system have held up better than most people expected.

Tire options on the Ford Fusion

Fusion fitments are 205/60R16 and 215/60R16 on base trims, 235/50R17 on SE models, 235/45R18 on Titanium and a 19-inch size on the 2017-2019 Sport. Nothing uses run-flats and nothing is staggered, so a set of four and a normal rotation is all that is needed. Factory tires were generally fuel-economy-oriented all-seasons from Michelin, Continental or Goodyear, which means grip and noise are both areas where a mid-tier replacement pays off, especially on the hybrid where low-rolling-resistance rubber was chosen for the EPA numbers. All-wheel drive was only offered on turbocharged cars, so most Fusions are front-drive and depend entirely on their tires in snow; a winter set on 16- or 17-inch wheels is money well spent in the north.
