About the Ford Taurus

The Taurus was Ford's full-size front-wheel-drive sedan in its final decade, sold from 2008 until production ended in March 2019. The 2010-2019 car is a big, heavy sedan on 18- or 19-inch wheels, and the SHO version added all-wheel drive and a twin-turbo V6. Owners come here mostly to sort out which of the three common sizes their car actually wears.

What the press said

The 2010 Taurus was received well at launch for its interior quality, its quiet ride and the SHO's genuinely rapid twin-turbo V6, and reviewers were pleased with how far Ford had moved the car from the Five Hundred. Criticism built over the following decade: passenger space was tight for the exterior size, rear visibility was poor because of the small windows and high beltline, and Ford made almost no meaningful changes after 2013. By the end, road tests were mainly noting that a nine-year-old design was still on sale.

Once a household name, the Ford Taurus is now destined for the great scrap-heap in the sky as 2019 will be its last year on sale.

US Taurus sales were still running at 382,035 in 2000 and ended at 9,924 in 2019; Ford separately sold 67,480 Taurus-based Police Interceptor sedans between 2012 and 2019.

Was it a success?

The Taurus was one of the great commercial successes of the 1980s and 1990s, America's best-selling car for several years running, and then a slowly declining product that Ford killed along with the rest of its sedans in 2019. Resale is poor, which makes a late Taurus one of the cheapest large, quiet, comfortable used cars available. Reliability reputation is decent for the 3.5-liter V6 and six-speed automatic, with the SHO's turbo plumbing, water pump and PTU being the known expensive items.

Tire options on the Ford Taurus

The Taurus wears square, non-staggered fitments in three main sizes: 215/60R17 on 2008-2009 cars, 235/55R18 on 2010-2019 SE and SEL, and 255/45R19 on SEL and Limited trims with the larger wheels. Nothing is run-flat, and the car carries a compact spare under the trunk floor. Factory rubber was Michelin, Goodyear and Continental touring all-seasons on the mainstream cars, with the SHO specified on Goodyear Eagle F1 performance tires in 245/45R19 on some years. Because the SHO is all-wheel drive through a Haldex-style coupling, keep its four tires matched and avoid mixing tread depths badly; the front-drive cars are much more forgiving. The 255/45R19 fitment is the expensive one and there is no reason a non-SHO owner cannot fit the 18-inch wheel and 235/55R18 for winter, which rides better and costs less. Winter tire selection is deep in 17- and 18-inch and adequate in 19-inch. Tread life on a front-drive Taurus is good, often 50,000 miles or more, because the car is not driven hard.
