About the Ram 2500/3500

Ram 2500 and 3500 are the two heavy-duty pickups in the Ram line, the three-quarter-ton and the one-ton, and they share cabs, frames and most tire sizes. This page exists because the two are usually shopped and shod together, and because the 3500 dual-rear-wheel version needs narrower tires in a higher load range than anything else in the range. Buyers here are usually towing, plowing or hauling, so load range and speed rating come before price.

The 3500 draws praise for its gooseneck and fifth-wheel ratings and criticism for the price of a loaded Limited, which now runs well past a luxury sedan. Was it a success?

Commercially the heavy duties are the backbone of the Ram brand, outselling most passenger cars and carrying much higher transaction prices. Used values hold up well, particularly on crew-cab diesel four-wheel-drive trucks, which is why a decade-old example can still cost as much as a new mid-size car. The reputation is mixed rather than bad: the Cummins engine is respected, while emissions hardware, the 68RFE transmission and front suspension parts on four-wheel-drive trucks are the known cost centers.
