Criticism concentrated on the Sensus touchscreen taking over functions that should have stayed physical, and on powertrain refinement from the twin-charged four-cylinder. Plug-in hybrid versions drew praise for real electric range and criticism for a jerky transition between power sources.
More stylish, more efficient, more luxurious, roomier, and better equipped than the model it replaces, the XC60 is now far more competitive.

Was it a success?
The XC60 has been a clear commercial success and is the car that carried Volvo through its transition to Chinese ownership. Resale is average for a European premium SUV, weaker on plug-in hybrids where battery and drivetrain repairs worry used buyers. Reliability is middling: the engines and gearbox are generally sound, but electrical faults, Sensus software and the 12-volt and 48-volt systems on mild hybrids generate most of the complaints.

Nothing is staggered, no XC60 uses factory run-flats, and every car takes the same tire on all four corners, so rotation is normal. Original equipment is usually Michelin, Pirelli or Continental touring rubber in a Volvo-specified compound, often with acoustic foam on quieter trims; the foam is worth keeping if you want the cabin to stay as quiet as it was.
