About the Chevrolet Impala
The Impala was Chevrolet's full-size sedan, sold under that name from 1958 until 2020 and for decades one of the highest-volume cars in America. The last two generations were front-wheel-drive family sedans, sold heavily to rental and police fleets as well as retail buyers. Tire buyers land here because the same car can be found on anything from a 16-inch steel wheel to a 20-inch alloy.
Launched in 1958. Launched in 1958 as the top trim of the Bel Air, the Impala became its own model the following year and went on to become the best-selling car in the United States for much of the 1960s.

2000-2005
Eighth generation (W-body)
The return of the Impala name to a front-wheel-drive sedan, with a rounded body, twin round taillights on each side as a nod to the 1960s cars, and a plain interior. LS trims ran 16-inch wheels with 225/60R16 tires.

2006-2013
Ninth generation (W-body)
A reskin of the same platform with a squarer nose, a split grille and, on SS models, a 5.3-liter V-8 with cylinder deactivation. This is the generation that filled rental fleets. LS models kept 225/60R16 while LT and LTZ trims moved to 17-inch wheels with 225/55R17 tires.
2014-2020
Tenth generation (Epsilon II)
Introduced at the 2012 New York show, a completely different car on GM's Epsilon II platform, much larger, lower and better finished, and shared with the Buick LaCrosse. Identify it by the wide split grille and the long dash-to-axle proportion. LT trims run 235/50R18, LTZ and Premier models 245/40R20.
What the press said
The W-body Impalas were reviewed as adequate and unremarkable, with roomy interiors, a strong V-6 and cheap cabin materials, and reviewers routinely pointed out that they existed mainly for fleets. The 2014 car was a genuine surprise: it was widely praised for ride quality, quietness and interior design, and Consumer Reports rated it at the top of its class, which generated a great deal of coverage. Criticism concentrated on the sluggish four-cylinder base engine, a slow-shifting automatic and spongy brakes, and later on the fact that GM was building a very good sedan that almost nobody wanted.

US sales peaked at 311,128 in 2007, were still above 169,000 in 2012, and had fallen to 44,978 by 2019 when GM announced the model's end.
Was it a success?
The Impala was one of the great commercial successes in American automotive history and then a casualty of the crossover shift, killed off in 2020 despite being the best version of itself. Resale is poor, particularly on ex-fleet W-body cars, which makes a used 2014-2020 Impala one of the most car you can buy for the money. Reliability on the last generation is decent, with the 3.6-liter V-6 the engine to have; the earlier cars suffer from intake gasket and transmission issues typical of high-mileage GM W-bodies.

Tire options on the Chevrolet Impala
Fitments are 225/60R16 on base W-body cars, 225/55R17 on LT and LTZ trims, and 235/50R18 or 245/40R20 on the 2014-2020 car. Nothing is staggered, none of it is run-flat, and the tires are the same on all four corners, so rotation is normal. Original equipment was Goodyear Eagle LS and Michelin Premier touring all-seasons; these were chosen for quietness on a car built to cruise, and a comfort-oriented touring tire suits it better than anything sporting. The 20-inch 245/40R20 fitment on Premier trims looks the part but rides noticeably worse than the 18-inch setup on broken pavement, and many owners simply put the 18s back on. Load ratings are unremarkable since the car does not tow. All four sizes have a good winter selection, and the 16- and 17-inch sizes in particular are among the cheapest winter tires you can buy for a full-size car.
