About the Dodge Charger

The Charger is Dodge's full-size rear-drive sedan, revived in 2005 as a four-door and built through 2023 on the LX and LD platforms before returning as a new car for 2026. It was sold with V-6, Hemi V-8 and supercharged Hellcat power, and served as the default American police sedan for nearly two decades. Tire buyers land here because fitments run from a mild 235/55R17 to a 305/35R20 Widebody rear.

Reviewers liked the Charger's rear-drive layout, ride comfort and V-8 noise, and consistently criticized the 2006-2010 car's cheap interior and poor visibility. The 2011 redesign was treated as a large step up in cabin quality and steering, and the eight-speed automatic introduced soon after was widely praised. By the end of its run the press position was that the car was old but still uniquely satisfying, with the Scat Pack seen as the value pick and the Hellcat as absurd in a way reviewers enjoyed. Fuel economy, rear visibility and interior packaging were the recurring complaints.

US sales ran between roughly 75,000 and 97,000 a year for a decade, with the 2024 figure of 34,754 representing leftover inventory after production of the LD ended in December 2023.

Was it a success?

The Charger was a commercial success that lasted far longer than anyone expected, and a car that sold on volume to fleets and on margin to enthusiasts at the same time. Resale on V-8 Scat Pack and Hellcat models is strong and on V-6 rental-fleet cars poor, so the spread between trims is unusually wide. Reliability is mixed: the Pentastar V-6 and the eight-speed automatic are durable, while electronics, the Uconnect head unit and suspension bushings are the common complaints on high-mileage cars.

Fitments are wide: 245/45R17 on LX base cars, 235/55R17 and 245/50R18 on SXT models, 245/45R20 on R/T and Scat Pack, 275/40R20 on Hellcats, and a 305/35R20 on 2019-on Widebody cars. Standard cars are square and can be rotated; the Widebody and some Hellcat setups are effectively single-size all round but very wide, and the aftermarket for 305/35R20 is small, expensive and wears quickly. Original equipment is Goodyear Eagle F1 or Pirelli P Zero summer rubber on the V-8 performance trims and all-season touring tires on V-6 cars, with no run-flats anywhere in the range. All-wheel-drive V-6 cars came only in narrower sizes, which is why they are the practical choice in snow.
