About the Honda CR-V
The CR-V is Honda's compact crossover and for most of the past decade either the best-selling or second-best-selling SUV in the United States. It is a car-based, front-drive-biased five-seater with optional all-wheel drive, aimed squarely at families rather than at anything off-road. Tire shoppers land here in volume because the CR-V spans three wheel diameters within a single generation, from a 17-inch LX to a 19-inch Touring.
Launched in 1997. Launched in the US for 1997, the CR-V was built on Civic underpinnings with a tall wagon body, a fold-out picnic table in the cargo floor and a side-hinged tailgate with the spare wheel mounted on it.

First generation (RD1)
Boxy and upright with the spare wheel mounted on a side-hinged rear door and the license plate set into the bumper. Fifteen-inch steel or alloy wheels on tall 205/70R15 tires. Automatic models have a column-mounted shifter.

Second generation (RD4)
Larger and rounder, still with the swing-out tailgate and external spare, but with vertical tail lamps running up the D-pillars. The dash-mounted gear lever and flip-up center tray are unique to this generation. Sixteen-inch wheels on EX.

2007-2011
Third generation (RE)
The tailgate changes to a conventional top-hinged hatch and the spare moves under the cargo floor, which is the fastest way to tell it from a 2006 car. The nose is heavily rounded with a large sloping hood. Seventeen-inch wheels on LX and EX.

Fifth generation (RW)
Longer wheelbase, a much wider grille with a thick chrome bar and vertical tail lamps set high on the D-pillars. The 1.5-liter turbo replaces the 2.4 on all but the base trim. Seventeen-inch wheels on LX, 18s on EX and EX-L, 19s on Touring and the hybrid.
2023-2024
Sixth generation (RS)
Longer and flatter-sided with a squarer nose, a wider grille and tail lamps that sit almost vertically in the rear pillars. Hybrid Sport and Sport Touring trims get a black grille surround and hidden exhaust outlets. Seventeen-inch wheels on LX, 18s on EX and Sport, 19s on Sport Touring.
What the press said
The CR-V has been a fixture on best-in-class lists for two decades, mostly on packaging, ride comfort and rear-seat and cargo space rather than on driving excitement. Reviewers praise the fold-flat rear seat, the low load floor and the visibility, and the hybrid has been called the best version since 2020 for both refinement and economy. The regular criticisms are a continuously variable transmission that drones under acceleration, road noise on coarse surfaces, and all-wheel drive that has never been standard even on top trims. The 1.5-liter turbo's oil-dilution problem in cold climates got significant press coverage around 2018 and 2019.
As a well-built and well-rounded compact crossover, the Honda CR-V is a household name for good reason.

US CR-V sales have run between roughly 238,000 and 404,000 a year since 2018, with the 2022 dip caused by supply shortages during the generation changeover.
Was it a success?
One of the most successful vehicles Honda has ever sold, and by 2025 it was setting record US volumes at over 400,000 a year. Resale is excellent and used CR-Vs command a premium over most rivals. Reliability reputation is strong, with the notable exceptions of the 1.5-liter turbo's oil-dilution issue on 2017-2019 cars in cold climates and some air-conditioning condenser failures. Tires are cheap and stocked everywhere in 17- and 18-inch sizes; the 19-inch Touring fitment is the expensive one.

Tire options on the Honda CR-V
LX trims run 235/65R17, EX and EX-L use 235/60R18 and Touring or Sport Touring sit on 235/55R19; all three sizes have nearly the same rolling diameter, so ride comfort and price are the real difference. Nothing is staggered and no CR-V has come with factory run-flats, but recent cars ship with a repair kit instead of a spare on some trims, which is worth knowing before you buy a tire with poor puncture resistance. OE fitments are typically Michelin Primacy, Bridgestone Turanza or Continental CrossContact all-seasons. Winter tire availability is excellent in 235/65R17 and 235/60R18 and thinner in 235/55R19, which is why owners of 19-inch cars often buy a spare set of 17-inch wheels for the cold months. Towing is limited to around 1,500 pounds so load rating is rarely the deciding factor and the OE load index is plenty.
