About the Jeep Compass
The Compass is Jeep's compact crossover, sold since the 2007 model year and completely reinvented for 2017 when it moved onto the Renegade's platform and grew a Grand-Cherokee-in-miniature body. It is a high-volume, mostly front-drive family crossover with an off-road Trailhawk version at the top. Tire shoppers land here on 16-, 17- or 18-inch sizes that are among the cheapest in the SUV aisle.
Launched in 2006. Launched in 2006 for the 2007 model year, the Compass was one of Jeep's first car-based crossovers, sharing its platform with the Dodge Caliber and arriving alongside the more rugged-looking Jeep Patriot.

First generation (MK)
The original Compass is the soft, rounded one with a body-colored grille and headlamps that wrap into the fenders; a 2011 facelift gave it a squarer nose to look more like the Grand Cherokee. Most came with a continuously variable transmission, and wheels were 16 or 17 inches with tall sidewalls. It was sold beside the boxier Patriot on the same running gear.

Second generation (MP)
A clean break: shorter overhangs, a floating roof with blacked-out pillars, a seven-slot grille set into a proper hood line, and tail lights that echo the Grand Cherokee. Trims run Sport, Latitude, Limited and Trailhawk, with the Trailhawk adding a red tow hook, a lifted suspension and all-terrain tires. Wheel sizes step from 16-inch steel on early Sports to 17s and 18s higher up.
What the press said
The first-generation Compass was one of the more heavily criticized Jeeps of its era, taking hits for interior materials, road noise and a CVT that sapped what performance there was. The 2017 car was received far better for its styling and for the Trailhawk's genuine off-road ability, but reviewers have consistently called out a dated interior, a firm ride and a nine-speed automatic that is slow to sort itself out. The recurring verdict is that buyers choose it for the badge and the looks rather than the driving.
Though newer competitors offer fresher styling, nicer interiors, and a more satisfying on-road driving experience, the Jeep Compass can still take you off-road.

US sales peaked at 171,167 in 2018, the second generation's first full year, and have since settled around 100,000 a year.
Was it a success?
Commercially the Compass works: it sells six figures a year in the US and is one of Jeep's two volume products worldwide. Resale is soft, particularly on first-generation cars, which trade for very little and are often bought as cheap all-wheel-drive winter transport. Reliability reputation is below average, with the CVT on early cars and the nine-speed automatic and electronics on later ones drawing the most complaints.

Compass sizes are small, cheap and widely stocked: 215/70R16 on first-generation Sport models, 215/65R17 on second-generation Sport, 225/60R17 on Latitude and Limited, and 235/45R19 on the Trailhawk and top trims. Nothing is staggered, nothing is run-flat, and all-wheel-drive versions use an on-demand system rather than a full-time center differential, so you still want four matched tires but you are not going to destroy a transfer case with a slightly worn set. Original equipment has come from Goodyear, Continental and Firestone in touring all-season form, except on the Trailhawk, which leaves the factory on Falken Wildpeak all-terrains. The tall 65- and 70-series sidewalls are an advantage in winter, and dedicated snow tires are available in every one of these sizes from every major brand. Upsizing is rare and not worth it; the sensible move for a Compass owner who drives on dirt is a set of all-terrains in the stock 17-inch size.
