The Grand Cherokee is Jeep's mid-size SUV and the brand's most important model by revenue. It has always sat in an unusual spot, with genuine low-range off-road hardware available alongside interiors and prices that compete with German luxury SUVs. Tire shoppers land here across a very wide spread, from a 17-inch Laredo all-season to a 295-section summer tire on the SRT and Trackhawk.
Launched in 1992. Launched in 1992 at the Detroit auto show, where Bob Lutz drove a prototype up the steps and through a plate-glass window into Cobo Hall, the Grand Cherokee gave Jeep a unibody SUV with coil springs and available full-time four-wheel drive.

Second generation (WJ)
Rounder than the 1993-1998 car with flush headlamps and a smoother tail, and the first Grand Cherokee with the Quadra-Drive two-speed transfer case and progressive locking differentials. Sixteen-inch wheels on Laredo, 17s on Limited. The seven-slot grille is set into the bodywork rather than standing proud.
2005-2010
Third generation (WK)
A squarer body with a much more upright grille and rectangular headlamps, and the first Grand Cherokee with an available 6.1-liter SRT8 V8 and a diesel. Independent front suspension replaces the solid axle. Seventeen-inch wheels on Laredo, 18s and 20s higher up.
2011-2021
Fourth generation (WK2)
Developed with Mercedes-Benz and sharing a platform with the ML, this is the generation where the interior became genuinely upscale. Air suspension, a 707-horsepower Trackhawk and a Trailhawk trim all appear here. Seventeen-inch wheels on Laredo, 18s on Limited, 20s on Overland and Summit, 20-inch 295-section tires on SRT.
2022-2024
Fifth generation (WL)
A wider, flatter body with a much thinner grille and slim headlamps, sold alongside a three-row Grand Cherokee L that launched a year earlier. A plug-in hybrid 4xe joins the range. Eighteen-inch wheels on Laredo, 20s on Limited and Overland, 21s on Summit Reserve.
What the press said
The Grand Cherokee has generally been the best-reviewed Jeep, and the 2011 WK2 in particular was treated as a breakthrough for interior quality and ride comfort in an American SUV. Reviewers consistently praise the off-road hardware, the air suspension and the 5.7 and 6.4 V8s, and the Trackhawk was received as absurd in the best sense. Criticism is fairly constant: average fuel economy, Uconnect aside a history of electrical and build-quality complaints, and pricing on Summit and Summit Reserve trims that puts it against Audi and BMW without the same dealer experience. The 2022 car drew mixed notes on its four-cylinder base engine.
The Grand Cherokee combines mega off-road capability, everyday SUV practicality, and upscale appointments in a ruggedly handsome package.

US Grand Cherokee sales have run between roughly 210,000 and 265,000 a year since 2018, and the original ZJ generation alone accounted for 1,647,188 units built between 1993 and 1998.
Was it a success?
A long-running commercial success and consistently Jeep's best-selling model in the United States. Resale is respectable but not class-leading, and the higher trims depreciate faster than German rivals because the new-car discounts are bigger. Reliability reputation is the weak point: the 3.6 Pentastar and 5.7 HEMI are basically sound, but air suspension, electronics, and the 2011-2013 WK2's early build quality all generated complaints, and used buyers should be cautious with high-mileage air-sprung cars. Tire choice is excellent in the 18- and 20-inch sizes and thin at 21 inches.

Tire options on the Jeep Grand Cherokee
Laredo trims run 245/70R17 on the WK2 and 265/60R18 on the WL, Limited and Overland use 265/50R20, and Summit Reserve moves to 275/45R21. The SRT and Trackhawk are the outliers at 295/45R20 on a summer tire, and those cars genuinely need a winter set in cold climates because the OE compound goes hard below about 45 degrees Fahrenheit. Nothing is staggered on the regular models and none of them use factory run-flats, though the 4xe plug-in hybrid loses the spare well to its battery on some trims. OE fitments are typically Bridgestone Dueler, Goodyear Eagle or Pirelli Scorpion, with Falken Wildpeak all-terrains on the Trailhawk. If you tow near the 7,200-pound rating, keep the OE load index; the 17- and 18-inch sizes have much better winter tire availability than 21 inches, which is why many Summit owners keep a second smaller wheel set.
