About the Mitsubishi Outlander
The Outlander is Mitsubishi's compact crossover, sold in America since 2003 and, unusually for the class, offered with three rows of seats and with a plug-in hybrid version. The 2022 redesign put it on Nissan Rogue underpinnings, which changed the car completely. Tire sizes run from a tall 16-inch on early cars to 20-inch wheels on current SEL trims, and the plug-in adds several hundred pounds to think about.

A more serious-looking Outlander with a shark-nose grille from 2010, a split tailgate with a drop-down lower section, and the option of a 3.0-liter V6. Base ES trims sat on 16-inch wheels with 215/70R16 tires; higher trims ran 18s. This is the generation that introduced the third-row seat to the model line in America.

Third generation (GF)
Softer and more aerodynamic, with a two-bar chrome grille that grew into Mitsubishi's Dynamic Shield front end in the 2016 facelift, where chrome brackets frame the outer edges of the bumper. Seven seats remained standard on most trims. SE and SEL run 225/55R18, and this is the generation that brought the Outlander PHEV plug-in hybrid to the US for 2018.

2022-2024
Fourth generation (GN)
Built on the Nissan Rogue's platform and much larger looking, with a vertical Dynamic Shield nose, slim upper daytime running lights above the main headlamps, and a squared-off tail. SEL and Platinum trims carry 20-inch wheels on 255/45R20 tires, a big jump from anything the Outlander wore before. The PHEV version arrived for 2023.

Reviewers spent a decade describing the Outlander as the value choice with a long warranty and a third row nobody else offered, while criticizing its engines, its CVT and its interior. The 2022 redesign changed that assessment substantially: the cabin was widely praised as being a class above the price, and the equipment list is generous, but the handling is forgettable and the third row is still only usable by children. The Outlander PHEV was a genuine technical standout and was a 2014 World Green Car finalist.

Was it a success?
The Outlander is Mitsubishi's most important product in America and the 2022 car has been its most successful, lifting the brand's volume noticeably. Resale is weak, which is the perennial Mitsubishi problem and the reason a three-year-old Outlander is cheap. Reliability reputation is mid-pack: the naturally aspirated engines and the ten-year powertrain warranty work in its favor, while CVT longevity on older cars is the most common concern.
