About the Nissan Altima
The Altima is Nissan's mid-size family sedan, sold in the US since 1992 and for years the company's best-selling car. It competes directly with the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, and since 2019 it has been the only mainstream mid-size sedan offering all-wheel drive. Tire buyers land here because fitments range from a modest 215/60R16 on base cars to a low-profile 235/40R19 on SR trims.

Shorter and more sharply styled than the outgoing car, with a coupe added to the range and push-button start standard on higher trims. This is the generation where the CVT became the default transmission. Base 2.5 S trims ran 16-inch wheels with 215/60R16 tires.

L33
Smoother, more anonymous bodywork with a high beltline and no coupe version. Look for the single-piece grille with a chrome V and, from the 2016 facelift, a much larger V-Motion grille. SV and SL trims moved to 17-inch wheels with 215/55R17 tires while base cars kept 16s.
2019-2024
L34
Lower and wider, with a deep V-Motion grille, slim headlights and a fastback roofline. All-wheel drive became available for the first time, and the variable-compression VC-Turbo engine replaced the V-6. SR trims wear 19-inch wheels with 235/40R19 tires, a big drop in sidewall over any earlier Altima.
What the press said
The L32 was praised for handling that was sharper than the Camry's, and criticized for road noise and a CVT that drew constant complaint. The L33 was seen as competent but forgettable, with reviewers noting that Nissan had chased comfort at the cost of the model's old character. The 2019 redesign was much better received: the styling, the available all-wheel drive and the interior quality all drew praise, while the CVT and the slow steering response remained the standing criticisms.

Was it a success?
The Altima was one of the great volume successes of the 2000s and 2010s, but the sedan market it depended on has shrunk by two thirds. Resale is weak, partly because so many cars went to rental and subprime fleets, which makes used examples cheap but also means careful inspection pays. Reliability is the model's reputational problem: the CVT in the 2007-2012 and early 2013-2016 cars generated a long list of complaints and extended warranties, and buyers should check for transmission service history above everything else.

Tire options on the Nissan Altima
Sizes are 215/60R16 on base 2.5 cars, 215/55R17 on SV and SL trims, and 235/40R19 on SR models. None of it is staggered and no Altima has used run-flats, so rotation and replacement are simple and cheap. Original equipment has been mostly Continental ContiProContact, Bridgestone Turanza and Goodyear Assurance touring all-seasons, all of them chosen for rolling resistance rather than grip. The 19-inch SR fitment is the one to think about: it rides firmly, is more expensive, and is easier to damage on potholes, so owners who keep the car long often move back to a 17-inch wheel. All three sizes have a wide winter selection, and for all-wheel-drive SR owners a set of 17-inch winter wheels is usually cheaper than winter tires in 235/40R19.
