About the Nissan Frontier
The Frontier is Nissan's mid-size pickup, sold in the US since 1998 and famous for going sixteen model years with only minor changes before a full redesign for 2022. It competes with the Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger and Chevrolet Colorado. Tire buyers land here because the second-generation truck ran for so long that its 16- and 17-inch sizes are very high volume, and because the PRO-4X trims come on all-terrain rubber.
Launched in 1997. Launched in 1997 for the 1998 model year, the Frontier name replaced the long-running Nissan Hardbody pickup in the US and brought a wider body, a four-door crew cab option from 2000 and the first supercharged V-6 in the segment.

Unveiled on February 4, 2021, this generation keeps the old frame but changes every panel: a tall upright grille, blistered fenders that deliberately recall the 1980s Hardbody, and a completely new interior. S trims run 17-inch wheels with 245/70R17 tires; PRO-4X versions add a locking rear differential and all-terrain rubber.

What the press said
The 2005 D40 was well reviewed at launch for its V-6 and its towing capacity, and then reviewed for the next decade as an increasingly outdated truck that was nonetheless honest and cheap. Reviewers praised the 2020 introduction of the 3.8-liter V-6 and nine-speed automatic into the old body. The 2022 redesign was welcomed for fixing the interior and the styling, with reviewers noting that the carryover frame means ride quality and packaging still trail the newest rivals, and that fuel economy is poor for the class.

US sales have run between roughly 36,000 and 87,000 a year over the past decade, with the 2020 dip reflecting the changeover at the end of the D40's sixteen-year run.
Was it a success?
The Frontier has been a consistent second-tier success, selling on price against the Tacoma without ever threatening it. Resale is weaker than Toyota's but strong for a Nissan, and PRO-4X models hold value best. Reliability on the D40 is generally good apart from a well-known radiator failure that can push coolant into the automatic transmission on 2005-2010 trucks, which is worth checking on any used example; the 2022-on truck has had few significant issues.

Fitments are 31x10.50R15 on old Desert Runner models, 235/75R15 on base 2WD D40 trucks, 265/65R17 on SV and SL trims, 265/75R16 on the D40 PRO-4X, and 245/70R17 on the current truck. Nothing is staggered and no Frontier uses run-flats, so the spare matches and rotation is normal. Original equipment on PRO-4X models has been the BFGoodrich Rugged Trail and later all-terrain designs, while road-going trims came on Continental or Hankook highway tires. Towing is rated to 6,720 pounds on the current truck, so keep the load index at or above the placard figure and run the loaded rear pressure when hitched; the P-metric 265/65R17 is the fitment where stepping up to a load range C light-truck tire makes the most difference under weight.
