About the Toyota Sequoia

The Sequoia is Toyota's full-size, body-on-frame SUV, built on Tundra pickup underpinnings and sold almost exclusively in North America. It is the biggest three-row SUV Toyota makes and competes directly with the Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Expedition. Tire shoppers land here across 18- to 22-inch fitments, and the 2023 redesign changed every size on the vehicle.

Launched in 2001. Launched for the 2001 model year, the Sequoia was built on the first-generation Tundra's frame at Toyota's Indiana plant and was the company's first attempt at a genuinely American-sized eight-seat SUV.

What the press said

The Sequoia has always been reviewed as competent but a step behind the domestic full-size SUVs on packaging. The second generation was criticized for going fourteen model years with only minor updates, and for fuel economy from the 5.7-liter V8 that reviewers described as dire. The 2023 car was welcomed for the hybrid powertrain and much better cabin, but testers were unusually critical of the packaging: the return to a live rear axle raised the load floor, the third row is cramped and cargo space behind it is poor for a vehicle this size. Towing figures and off-road hardware on the TRD Pro get consistent praise.

Was it a success?

Commercially the weakest link in Toyota's US truck lineup for most of its life, selling roughly a tenth of what the Tahoe does, though the 2023 redesign tripled its volume. Resale on second-generation 5.7 V8 cars is strong because the drivetrain has an excellent reputation and low-mileage examples are scarce. Reliability for the 2008-2022 car is genuinely very good, with cam tower oil leaks and air-suspension failures on Platinum trims the main known issues; the newer hybrid V6 is less proven. Tire sizes on the third-generation car are not widely stocked.

Tire options on the Toyota Sequoia

Second-generation cars run 255/70R18 on SR5, 275/65R18 on Limited and 275/55R20 on Platinum. The 2023 redesign changed all of them: 265/70R18 on SR5, 285/65R18 on the TRD Pro, 265/60R20 on Limited and Platinum, and 265/50R22 on Capstone. Nothing is staggered and no Sequoia uses factory run-flats; OE fitments are usually Bridgestone Dueler, Michelin or Falken all-seasons, with Falken Wildpeak all-terrains on the TRD Pro. The 22-inch fitment is the one to think twice about, because 265/50R22 has very few replacement options and almost no winter choice, so a second 18- or 20-inch wheel set is worth budgeting for in a cold climate. If you tow near the 9,000-pound rating, keep the OE load index and note that some all-terrains in these sizes are rated below what a loaded Sequoia and trailer put on the rear axle.
