Seventh generation (LF)
Deliberately toned down from the YF, with a straighter roofline, a larger hexagonal grille and a much stiffer body. A 2018 facelift added a cascading grille and reshaped tail lamps. Sixteen-inch wheels on SE, 17s on Sport and Limited, 18s on the Sport 2.0T.

Eighth generation (DN8)
Very low and wide with a full-width light bar across the tail, hidden daytime running lamps that run up into the hood shut line, and a vast grille. The N Line adds a 290-horsepower turbo and quad exhausts. Sixteen-inch wheels on SE, 17s on SEL, 18s on SEL Plus and N Line.

The Sonata has drawn its best reviews for value and equipment rather than for driving, and the 2011 car in particular was praised for looking and feeling like a more expensive vehicle than its price suggested. Reviewers consistently note the standard driver-assistance content, the warranty and the interior design of the 2020 car. Criticism is steady: handling and steering feel that fall short of the Accord, second-row space that is tight for the class, and continuously variable or dual-clutch transmissions that have not always been smooth. Hyundai's engine problems of the 2011-2019 era received significant coverage and still affect how the car is perceived.

US Sonata sales peaked at 230,605 in 2012 and have fallen to around 60,000 a year as the mid-size sedan market shrank and Hyundai's own crossovers took the volume.
Was it a success?
A commercial success in the 2010s that has since lost roughly three quarters of its peak volume, partly to crossovers and partly to Hyundai's own Tucson and Santa Fe. Resale is the weakest of the mainstream mid-size sedans, which makes a used Sonata one of the cheapest ways into a modern family car. Reliability reputation is the sticking point: 2011-2019 cars with Theta II engines were subject to recalls and extended warranties for connecting-rod bearing failures, and some 2015-2019 models were also covered by anti-theft software campaigns. The 2020 and later cars have a better record. Tires are cheap in every size.
