About the Jeep Wrangler JL Rubicon
The Wrangler JL Rubicon is the off-road flagship of the fourth-generation Wrangler, built from 2018 through the JL's run. It adds electric front and rear locking differentials, a disconnecting front sway bar, a 4:1 low-range transfer case and taller factory tires over lesser Wranglers. Tire buyers land here more often than on almost any other model page, because the Rubicon leaves the factory on 33-inch tires and most owners go bigger.

JL Rubicon Xtreme Recon
A factory package that raises the Wrangler 1.5 inches and fits 35-inch tires on 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels, with a 4.56 axle ratio and reworked fender flares to clear them. The quickest tell is the tire itself plus the higher stance and the wider flares.

What the press said
Reviewers agreed the JL fixed most of the JK's on-road shortcomings while giving up nothing off-road: better steering, a quieter cabin, a usable infotainment system and far better seats. The eight-speed automatic was widely praised. Criticism focused on price escalation, wind noise that is still high by any normal standard, and fuel economy. The Rubicon in particular was called close to unbeatable on a trail straight off the showroom floor, with the caveat that buyers pay for capability most will never use.
There are comfier, roomier, and more fuel-efficient SUVs, but no others that offer the freeing feeling of popping the entire top on a sunny day.

Was it a success?
The JL was a commercial success from the start, with 2018 the Wrangler's best US year ever, and the Rubicon is the trim that holds its value best. Resale on low-mileage Rubicons is among the strongest in the industry, helped by a large aftermarket and buyers who want the lockers. Reliability is mixed: the drivetrain hardware is robust, but early JLs had well-documented steering-box and death-wobble complaints, and the 2.0-liter turbo and 4xe hybrid have had their own recalls.

Nothing is staggered and run-flats are not offered, but load range matters more here than on almost any other vehicle: load range C keeps ride quality and steering effort reasonable, while D and E are worth it only if you tow near the 3,500-pound rating or air down hard on rock. Owners upsize constantly, and 33x12.50R17, 35x12.50R17 and 37x12.50R17 are all common on lifted JLs, with 33s usually fitting a Rubicon without a lift.
