Mazda tire sizes

We cover 11 Mazda models across 24 factory fitments, spanning model years 1979 to 2024. The size that turns up most often on a Mazda is 215/45R18, followed by 215/55R18 and 225/65R17. Wheel diameters run from 13 to 20 inches, so the trim and wheel package matter as much as the model year.

Mazda sells over 400,000 vehicles a year in the United States, built around the CX-5, CX-50, CX-90 and the Mazda3, with the MX-5 Miata as the enthusiast anchor. The brand has moved upmarket without becoming a luxury brand, and it is the volume maker most often praised for steering feel. Its history includes the rotary-engined RX-7 and RX-8, which keeps a classic following alive.

Tire sizes are ordinary but the sidewalls are shorter than most rivals at the same price, because Mazda tunes for handling.

Tires on a Mazda

Mazda stamps no approval code on its tires, so the door placard is the complete specification. Every fitment is square, so four identical tires and normal rotation. What sets Mazda apart in this segment is wheel diameter at a given trim: a CX-5 Signature runs 225/55R19 where several rivals of the same size and price are on 18s, and a Mazda3 Preferred is on 215/45R18 where a Corolla is on 225/40R18 or smaller wheels.

Sizes have crept up steadily, a Mazda3 going from 195/65R15 in 2004 to 205/55R16, then 215/50R17 and now 215/45R18. Mazda's original tires are usually a touring all-season chosen with some regard for steering response, which means they are less of a compromise than most OE fitments but also wear faster, and owners frequently gain mileage by moving to a harder grand touring tire at some cost in feel. The Miata is the exception across the range, running narrow 195/55R15 and 205/45R17 fitments where the priority is low weight and progressive breakaway rather than outright grip, and it is one of very few modern cars where owners deliberately fit narrower tires than they could.

The models that matter

The CX-5 is the volume model, on 225/65R17 for Sport and S trims and 225/55R19 for Grand Touring and Signature. The CX-9 runs 255/60R18 or 255/50R20. The Mazda3 takes 205/55R16, 215/50R17 or 215/45R18 depending on trim and generation.

The CX-30 uses 215/55R18 and the Miata 195/55R15 or the MX-5's 205/45R17.

What owners find out later

The 19 inch CX-5 fitment looks like an upgrade but has noticeably less sidewall than the 17 inch one on the same vehicle, and a good number of owners buy a 17 inch winter set specifically to stop denting rims. Mazda uses direct TPMS with sensors in the wheels on most models, so a second set of wheels needs sensors. The MX-5's narrow tires mean that fitting a much wider aftermarket set changes the car's balance for the worse rather than better, which is the opposite of the usual assumption.

Older rotary cars, the RX-7 in particular, run 13 and 14 inch sizes that are being discontinued pattern by pattern, so buying a full set at once avoids mismatched brands later.
