The Mazda3 is Mazda's compact sedan and hatchback, and the car the company has leaned on for volume since 2003. 2010-2013
Second generation (BL)
The infamous grinning grille, with a broad upturned lower opening and headlights that sweep further back into the fenders. Wheels are 16 or 17 inches, and the 2012 facelift toned the smile down and introduced Skyactiv engines. The Mazdaspeed3 has a hood scoop and a large roof spoiler.
2014-2018
Third generation (BM/BN)
Kodo styling with a long hood, a small five-point grille and a cabin pushed rearward; there is no grin left. Base cars run 16-inch wheels, Touring and Grand Touring use 18s with 215/45R18 tires. A pop-up head-up display and a tablet-style center screen mark the interior out from the 2010-2013 car.
2019-2024
Fourth generation (BP)
Smoother, almost unadorned flanks with no character line and a very thick C-pillar on the hatchback. All-wheel drive became available for the first time, the rear suspension changed from multilink to a torsion beam, and Preferred and Premium trims wear 18s on 215/45R18. The turbocharged 2.5 T arrived for 2021.

The Mazda3 has been the critics' choice in the compact class for most of its life, praised for steering feel, body control, interior materials well above its price and, since 2019, a cabin that reviewers describe as near-premium. The complaints are consistent too: road noise, a tight rear seat, poor rear visibility in the hatchback and, on the 2019 car, the decision to swap the multilink rear axle for a torsion beam. The turbocharged 2.5 T added real pace but drew criticism for needing premium fuel to make its full rating. Reviewers generally recommend it over the Corolla and rate it alongside the Civic.
With the 3 sedan and hatch, shoppers have a lot of choices, all of which are fun, refined, and reasonably efficient.

US sales peaked above 130,000 in 2012 and have run between roughly 28,000 and 42,000 a year since 2020, as buyers moved to the CX-5 and CX-30.
Was it a success?
A critical success and a commercial one in its first decade, though US volume has shrunk as compact car buyers moved to crossovers. Resale is decent but not Honda-strong, and the reliability record is good, with rust on older Northeast cars and infotainment quirks the usual gripes. A used Mazda3 remains one of the better ways to get a genuinely enjoyable car for compact-sedan money.
