Buying tires at Walmart
National chain, selling tires since 1962, 2,300 stores. What tires cost there, what shipping and installation add, how returns work and what customers rate them.
Who owns it
Publicly traded Walmart Inc. (NYSE: WMT), founded by Sam Walton and James Walton on 2 July 1962 in Rogers, Arkansas and still 44.8 percent held by the Walton family, mainly through Walton Enterprises. Auto Care Centers are a department inside Supercenters, not a separate company. The revenue recorded here is company-wide and covers all of Walmart: $713.20 billion for fiscal 2026, the year ended 31 January 2026. The 2.1 million associates figure is company-wide too. Walmart does not report tire or service revenue separately.
What you can buy there
Sells national brands including Michelin, Goodyear, Bridgestone, Continental and Falken next to two Walmart-only value lines, Douglas, a Goodyear brand, and Goodyear Reliant, built for Walmart. A Marketplace layer of third-party sellers widens the online size range well past what any store holds, and since April 2024 eligible Marketplace tires can also be sent to a store for fitting. Wheels are an online-only Marketplace item and there are no used tires; high-performance and large light-truck sizes are thin on the ground in the stores themselves.
Shipping
Tires on walmart.com ship free to a store for installation or to a home address, with free shipping from a $35 order; below that a fee of roughly $7 applies, and a Walmart+ membership removes the minimum. Walmart Marketplace opened the same ship-to-store route for third-party sellers' tires in April 2024, with the tires tagged "Available for Installation" and the fitting appointment booked in the Walmart app or on walmart.com in the same flow. What a given store has on the shelf is far narrower than the website, so most orders are shipped in rather than picked up the same day.
Installation
Fitting is done in the store's own bays by Walmart technicians, which Walmart Marketplace says starts at $18 per tire. Third-party write-ups put the basic package around $18, covering mounting, a valve stem service pack and lifetime balance and rotation, and the road hazard version around $28; Walmart's own help pages confirm the gap by stating that Walmart+ members get the Value package with road hazard protection for the price of the Basic package, saving $10 per tire. Tire disposal, road force balancing and similar extras are charged on top. There is no wheel alignment service and no mobile fitting.
Returns and warranty
Returns and exchanges on tires bought online are taken at any Auto Care Center in the country, and Walmart states that appointment changes and returns are handled at any of its centers nationwide, so nothing has to be shipped back. Unmounted tires fall under Walmart's ordinary store return process at the service desk with the receipt or order in the app. Once a tire is fitted and damaged, the claim runs through the road hazard package if it was bought, and otherwise through the tire maker's own warranty. Tires sold by Marketplace sellers follow that seller's return terms, which are frequently tighter than Walmart's own.
Where they sit on price
One of the cheapest places in the United States to put tires on a car, driven by the Douglas and Goodyear Reliant house lines, frequent rollbacks and a fitting package that starts at $18 per tire. Premium brands are priced close to everyone else, so the advantage is concentrated at the budget end. No membership is required to buy or to have tires fitted; Walmart+ only adds the road hazard upgrade at no extra cost.

- Quality swings hard between stores because technician training is informal, and Walmart's corporate BBB profile records 17,947 complaints closed in the last three years
- No wheel alignment service and no mobile installation, and limited stock of high-performance and large light-truck sizes in the stores

Questions people ask about Walmart
Do I need a membership to buy tires at Walmart?
No. Walmart Auto Care Centers are open to anyone, with no club fee for either the tires or the fitting, which separates them from Costco and Sam's Club. A paid Walmart+ membership is optional and its only tire benefit is the road hazard installation package at the price of the basic one, a $10 per tire saving according to Walmart's own help pages.
